Aszure Barton

Biography

Aszure Barton is a Canadian choreographer whose work is celebrated for its striking visual imagery, emotional depth, and the seamless way it melds diverse movement vocabularies. Born and raised in Canada, she trained at the National Ballet School of Canada and subsequently built an international career creating works for a wide range of companies including Mikhail Baryshnikov's Hell's Kitchen Dance, American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, National Ballet of Canada, and New York City Ballet. She founded her own ensemble, Aszure Barton & Artists, in 2003. Her first full-length ballet, Mere Mortals (2024), created for San Francisco Ballet — the first full-length ballet by a female choreographer in the company's history — reimagines the myth of Pandora's Jar through the lens of artificial intelligence, to a score by Floating Points.
