Choreographer
Christopher Wheeldon
Biography
Christopher Wheeldon OBE (born 1973 in Yeovil, Somerset) is a British choreographer and director who trained at The Royal Ballet School before joining the New York City Ballet in 1993, where he was named Resident Choreographer in 2001 — the first choreographer to hold that title since George Balanchine. He founded his own company, Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company, in 2007. He has created works for virtually every major ballet company in the world, and his prolific output spans pure-dance works such as Polyphonia and narrative ballets of considerable theatrical ambition. For The Royal Ballet, his major works include Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (2011) — the company's first full-length commission in a decade — The Winter's Tale (2014), Like Water for Chocolate (2022), and Strapless (2016). He also created An American in Paris (2015) for Broadway, winning the Tony Award for Best Choreography.
