Choreographer
Crystal Pite
Biography
Crystal Pite (born 1970 in Terrace, British Columbia) is a Canadian choreographer and the founder and artistic director of Kidd Pivot, based in Vancouver. One of the most celebrated and sought-after choreographers working today, Pite trained at the School of Alberta Ballet before joining Ballet BC in 1988. She danced with William Forsythe's Frankfurt Ballet from 1996 to 2004, an experience that profoundly shaped her choreographic sensibility. Since founding Kidd Pivot in 2002, she has created an internationally acclaimed body of work distinguished by its visceral physicality, theatrical intelligence, and emotional depth. She has created works for Nederlands Dans Theater, Paris Opéra Ballet, and, most prominently in the United Kingdom, for The Royal Ballet, where Flight Pattern (2017) — a response to the global refugee crisis — was her first main-stage commission and became an immediate landmark of the repertoire. Her work sits at the intersection of contemporary dance, theatre, and installation, frequently collaborating with writers, composers, and visual artists. She is a multiple Laurence Olivier Award winner.
