Johan Inger

Biography

Johan Inger (born 1967 in Stockholm) is a Swedish choreographer who trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet School and danced with the Royal Swedish Ballet before joining Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), where he performed and began choreographing from the late 1990s. He served as Artistic Director of Compañía Nacional de Danza (Spain) from 2008 to 2010. His choreography is rooted in the contemporary dance tradition of NDT but frequently incorporates narrative and theatrical elements with great clarity and emotional directness. His Carmen (2015, created for Compañía Nacional de Danza and subsequently taken into repertoire by English National Ballet and other companies) is one of the most acclaimed dance adaptations of Bizet's opera, reimagining the story with a bold physicality and psychological depth that has made it a popular success worldwide.
