Choreographer
Wayne McGregor
Biography
Sir Wayne McGregor CBE (born 1970 in Stockport) is a British choreographer widely regarded as one of the most innovative and intellectually ambitious dance-makers of his generation. He founded Studio Wayne McGregor (formerly Random Dance) in 1992 and was appointed Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet in 2006, the first contemporary choreographer to hold that position at the company. His work is distinguished by its extreme physical language — hyperextended, technically demanding, architecturally complex — and by his interdisciplinary approach, frequently collaborating with scientists, neuroscientists, visual artists, and composers to interrogate ideas of the body, mind, and technology. His major works for The Royal Ballet include Chroma (2006), Infra (2008), Woolf Works (2015 — inspired by the novels of Virginia Woolf, and winner of the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance), Obsidian Tear (2016), and MADDADDAM (2024), co-created with Margaret Atwood. He was knighted in 2024.
