Ballet Black

Ballet CompanyLondonArtistic Director: Cassa Pancho OBE

Ballet Black was founded in 2001 by Cassa Pancho OBE to create more opportunities in classical ballet for dancers of Black and Asian descent and to broaden who sees themselves represented in the art form. From that founding mission, the company has grown into one of the most important independent ballet organisations in Britain. Based in London, Ballet Black has combined a clear social purpose with serious artistic standards, proving that questions of representation, access and repertory ambition can strengthen one another rather than compete. Its public identity is inseparable from the idea of change, but the company’s reputation rests just as firmly on the quality of its dancers and commissions.

Over the last two decades Ballet Black has become a prolific commissioner of new work, building a repertory that gives contemporary choreographers a platform while remaining grounded in ballet technique. The company has performed widely across the UK and developed one of the most diverse audiences in British ballet. That achievement is not cosmetic. Ballet Black’s repertory and collaborations have helped open classical ballet to different stories, different makers and different publics, while also creating a professional home in which artists can develop with genuine visibility. Its awards history and critical recognition reflect how consistently the company has turned mission into sustained artistic practice.

For Plie, Ballet Black matters because it has changed the British ballet landscape from inside the form rather than standing outside it in opposition. It demonstrates that a relatively lean company can have outsized influence when it is clear about its purpose, serious about commissioning and committed to audiences who have often been underserved by mainstream institutions. In the UK ecology, Ballet Black is now not just a corrective presence but a major company in its own right.
