Ballet Company
The Royal Ballet
About
The Royal Ballet is one of the defining ballet companies in the world, renowned for the depth of its classical heritage, the individuality of its dancers and the breadth of its repertory. The company traces its origins to 1931, when Ninette de Valois founded the Vic-Wells Ballet, and it has been based at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden since the post-war reopening of the theatre in 1946. That history matters not only because it is illustrious, but because it still shapes the company’s artistic identity: the Royal Ballet remains unusually grounded in a living British tradition while also operating at the highest international level.
Its repertory brings together the nineteenth-century classics, works by Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan, and major creations by contemporary choreographers including Wayne McGregor and Christopher Wheeldon. This combination has given the company a distinctive profile. It is neither a museum of heritage nor a company that treats tradition as an obstacle; rather, it has become a place where stylistic lineage, musical intelligence and new creation can actively inform one another. Under Director Kevin O’Hare, The Royal Ballet continues to cultivate dancers who are technically formidable but also prized for dramatic nuance, detail and expressive clarity.
For Plie readers, The Royal Ballet is central not simply because of prestige, but because so much of British ballet culture radiates out from it. Training pathways, choreographic influence, repertory history and audience expectations are all shaped by the company’s standards and choices. Its home at the Royal Opera House gives it symbolic weight, but its real significance lies in how consistently it renews the relationship between history and present-tense performance. At its best, The Royal Ballet makes ballet feel both monumental and alive.
