Biography
Vincenzo Lamagna (born 1976 in Naples) is an Italian composer who has developed a distinctive voice at the intersection of contemporary classical music, electronic sound and world music traditions. He has become a regular collaborator with Akram Khan Company, composing original scores that support Khan's choreographic vision with precision and emotional intensity.
His score for Akram Khan's Giselle (2016), created for English National Ballet, draws on Adolphe Adam's original ballet score as a source of fragmentary musical memory while developing an entirely new musical language appropriate to Khan's reimagined setting — a story of migrant workers, displacement and oppression set in an industrial dystopia. The score weaves orchestral and electronic elements with vocal writing, creating a sound world that is simultaneously familiar (through traces of Adam) and radically transformed. The production has been widely acclaimed as one of the most important ballets of the twenty-first century and has toured extensively worldwide.
