About
The Grand Opera House York is a Grade II listed theatre located on Clifford Street in York's historic town centre. Originally built as a corn exchange in 1868 to a design by George Alfred Dean in the Italianate style, the red-brick building features an asymmetrical main frontage with distinctive round-headed windows. In 1902, William Peacock transformed the corn exchange and an adjacent warehouse into a music hall, creating the Grand Theatre and Opera House at a cost of £24,000.
After comprehensive restoration in 1989, the theatre reopened as the Grand Opera House with its original splendour restored. Today it seats 984 spectators across three levels: the Stalls (395 seats), Dress Circle (269 seats), and Grand Circle (320 seats). The venue presents an outstanding programme of West End theatre productions, first-class comedy, musicals, dance, opera, and ballet. As an ATG Entertainment venue, it serves as a cultural anchor in York's city centre, close to landmarks including Clifford's Tower, the River Ouse, and numerous historic attractions.
