About

The Linbury Theatre is a contemporary studio theatre within the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. This intimate 400-seat venue opened in 2018 as part of the Royal Opera House's comprehensive £50 million 'Open Up' renovation project. Designed by architects Stanton Williams with theatre consultancy by Charcoalblue, the Linbury Theatre replaced a previous black box studio space, reimagining it as a flexible performance space at the heart of the West End.

The theatre's distinctive horseshoe-shaped auditorium prioritises audience intimacy and inclusivity. The space features reconfigurable purple upholstered seat forms designed by Stanton Williams and Charcoalblue, enabling multiple configurations including thrust, end-on, traverse, in-the-round, and flat-floor formats. Technical innovations include seating elevators for variable rake angles, a movable orchestra pit, and an advanced electro-acoustic system that enhance its versatility for diverse programming.

Programming focuses on experimental and contemporary work, hosting performances by independent companies and serving as the primary venue for ROH2, the Royal Opera House's contemporary producing arm. The theatre is equipped with state-of-the-art technical infrastructure, public amenities including a bar and cloakroom, and is one of London's most technologically advanced performance venues. The Linbury is ideal for a diverse range of events including experimental theatre, dance, music, private functions, and community engagement programmes.
