About
Newcastle Theatre Royal is one of only nine Grade I listed theatres in the United Kingdom and regarded as the nation's finest theatre building. Located at 100 Grey Street in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, the venue has been entertaining audiences for almost 185 years. Originally completed in 1837 and designed by renowned architects John and Benjamin Green, the theatre features an outstandingly fine classical exterior showcasing a portico of giant Corinthian pilasters. Following a catastrophic fire in 1899, the interior was brilliantly redesigned by prolific theatre architect Frank Matcham, and his Edwardian auditorium interior survives today with 1,200 seats across four levels.
The independent registered charity operates under the vision 'A love of theatre for everyone, that lasts a lifetime,' presenting an ambitious creative programme including drama, West End musicals, comedy, ballet, dance, family shows, opera, and pantomime. The theatre has been recognised as North East's Most Welcoming Theatre at the UK Theatre Awards multiple times and was named the national winner in 2015.
