About
Theatre Royal Plymouth is the UK's largest and best-attended regional producing theatre, located on Royal Parade in Plymouth. The current venue was designed by the prestigious Peter Moro Partnership and officially opened on 5 May 1982 by Princess Margaret. Built in distinctive brutalist style, the theatre's bold geometric architecture has been commended and compared to the work of renowned architect Denys Lasdun, making it an iconic example of post-war design.
The venue comprises three performance spaces: The Lyric, a 1,300-seat main auditorium with unique compression technology to create a more intimate 787-seat space; The Drum, a 200-seat studio specialising in new plays and innovative work; and The Lab, a 50-seat experimental space. The theatre presents extensive programming including major touring drama, musicals, opera, and dance productions, hosting leading companies such as Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, and Welsh National Opera.
With over 300,000 annual visitors, Theatre Royal Plymouth serves as both a producing and receiving house, maintaining a strong commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement. The theatre is renowned for producing new work, particularly through The Drum which won the Peter Brook Empty Space Award in 2007, and collaborates regularly with leading UK theatre companies and venues.
