Liam Scarlett

Biography

Liam Scarlett (1986–2021) was a British choreographer who trained at The Royal Ballet School and joined The Royal Ballet as a dancer in 2005. He showed exceptional choreographic promise early, and his first work for the company, Asphodel Meadows (2010), was a critical success. He was appointed Artist in Residence at The Royal Ballet in 2012, becoming one of the youngest choreographers to hold such a position at a major company. His full-length ballets for The Royal Ballet include Frankenstein (2016, co-produced with San Francisco Ballet), with a commissioned score by Lowell Liebermann, and The Age of Anxiety (2014). He also created works for American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and the Royal New Zealand Ballet. His career was tragically cut short following an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, and he died in April 2021.
