About This Work

Frankenstein is a full-length ballet in three acts, choreographed by Liam Scarlett to a commissioned score by Lowell Liebermann, with designs by John Macfarlane. A co-production between The Royal Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, it received its world premiere at the Royal Opera House on 4 May 2016. Based on Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, the ballet treats the story primarily as a domestic drama, centring on Victor Frankenstein's obsession with defeating death and the catastrophic consequences his creation visits upon everyone he loves. The work was Scarlett's first full-length narrative ballet for The Royal Ballet, where he had served as Artist in Residence.
