Biography
Lowell Liebermann (born 1961 in New York) is an American composer and pianist whose music has been widely praised for its expressive directness and neo-Romantic sensibility. He studied at the Juilliard School under David Diamond and Vincent Persichetti, and has taught composition at the Manhattan School of Music. His works span orchestral, chamber, vocal and operatic genres and have been recorded extensively.
His major compositions include three symphonies, four piano concertos, a flute concerto, the opera Miss Lonelyhearts (2007) and the Gargoyles for piano (1989), one of his most frequently performed works. His score for Liam Scarlett's Frankenstein (2016), commissioned by The Royal Ballet, is a large-scale orchestral work in the tradition of the great nineteenth-century narrative ballet scores. The commission drew on Liebermann's gift for vivid orchestral colour, dramatic pacing and melodic invention, producing a score that supports the ballet's psychological horror and romantic tragedy with equal effectiveness.
