Biography
Philip Feeney (born 1954) is a British composer who has become one of the most prolific and versatile writers of original ballet scores working today. He is particularly associated with Northern Ballet, for whom he has composed a substantial body of work including Gentlemen Jack (2022), Merlin (2007), Far from the Madding Crowd (2014), A Midsummer Night's Dream (2001) and Cleopatra (2011), among others. His scores are notable for their directness of expression, theatrical flair and ability to support narrative dance drama with music that is accessible without being simplistic.
Feeney studied composition at the University of York and has also worked extensively in music education and as an orchestrator. His ballet commissions for Northern Ballet have coincided with the company's rise to prominence as a producer of full-length narrative works, and he has played a significant role in shaping the company's distinctive dramatic identity.
