About This Work
Northern Ballet's Gentleman Jack brings the extraordinary life of Anne Lister to the stage in a bold and charged new ballet. Known as 'the first modern lesbian', Anne Lister defied 19th-century convention, living and loving entirely on her own terms from her ancestral home of Shibden Hall in Halifax. Choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa to a specially commissioned score by Peter Salem, the ballet weaves together Yorkshire folk sounds and ambient electronics to tell a story of courage, identity and desire. Part narrative thriller, part love story, it is one of contemporary ballet's most daring and emotionally resonant works.
