About
The Liverpool Empire Theatre is one of the United Kingdom's most prestigious performance venues. Located on Lime Street in the cultural heart of Liverpool, the theatre features the largest two-tier auditorium in the UK, with a seating capacity of 2,348. Originally opened in 1896 as The Empire following its renaming from the Royal Alexandra Theatre, the current building is a masterpiece designed by W. and T. R. Milburn and opened in 1925.
The theatre is architecturally significant, with a striking Neo-classical Portland stone façade and a Grade II listed status as part of Liverpool's William Brown Street Conservation Area. The building showcases ornate carving and ornamentation by E. O. Griffiths, constructed on a steel frame. The auditorium underwent major refurbishment in 1999, which enlarged the stage, and a modern extension was added in 2002, enhancing the building's presence on Lime Street.
As a leading entertainment destination, the Liverpool Empire hosts world-class theatre productions, musicals, concerts, and comedy shows. The venue offers exceptional accessibility features including street-level access, sixteen wheelchair spaces, accessible toilets on multiple floors, and welcomes assistance dogs. Its prime location next to Lime Street Station, served by local and national rail services, makes it easily accessible to audiences from across the region.
