About
The London Coliseum is the largest theatre in London's West End, opened on 24 December 1904. Designed by renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham, the building features exuberant Free Baroque and Italian Renaissance architecture with a distinctive asymmetrical facade and a prominent 145-foot globe-topped tower on the south side. The ornate entrance peristyle showcases curved glass and handsome panelled features, creating an iconic presence on St Martin's Lane.
Originally built as a music hall and variety theatre, the Coliseum has hosted musical comedies, stage plays, and later film screenings in Cinerama format. Since 1968, it has been home to the English National Opera (formerly Sadler's Wells Opera Company), establishing itself as a major centre for opera and musical theatre in London. With a seating capacity of 2,359, it remains London's largest single-auditorium theatre.
The venue is fully accessible and committed to inclusive theatre experiences. It features wheelchair spaces, accessible toilets across multiple levels, hearing loops, audio description, and captioned performances. The theatre offers half-price tickets through its Access scheme for audiences with access needs, with dedicated access supervisors attending every performance to ensure visitors receive comprehensive support.
