About

The Palace Theatre is one of Manchester's most iconic performing arts venues, located on Oxford Street in the city centre. Opening on 18 May 1891, this magnificent Grade II Listed building was designed by renowned architect Alfred Darbyshire and represents a masterpiece of late Victorian theatre architecture. Originally built as a music hall with a capacity of 3,675 seats, the theatre exemplifies the grandeur of Edwardian entertainment culture.

The theatre's distinctive architecture features French-Neo-Grecian design with elaborate Italian Renaissance decoration, including intricate Gesso duro and Graffito work executed by Italian craftsmen. The original ornate facade was covered with cream faience tiles in 1953 as a temporary post-war modernization measure. In the late 1970s, major renovations extended the stage and dressing rooms to accommodate international companies such as the Royal Opera House's Covent Garden Opera and the Kirov Ballet, while the auditorium and front of house were restored to their original Edwardian splendour.

Today the Palace Theatre operates as a full-service performing arts venue with a capacity of 1,955 seats distributed across the Stalls (838), Circle (649), and Grand Tier (511). Operated by the Ambassador Theatre Group, it presents a diverse programming calendar including West End musicals, classical theatre, comedy, dance, and opera. The venue's excellent public transport connections, with Manchester Oxford Road railway station just a two-minute walk away and St Peter's Square Metrolink station five minutes distant, make it easily accessible to audiences across Greater Manchester.
