Sadler's Wells East
About
Sadler's Wells East is a state-of-the-art dance theatre opened in February 2025 at East Bank, the new cultural quarter within Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. Designed by renowned Irish architects O'Donnell and Tuomey, the building features distinctive handmade Venetian brick and tile cladding in warm yellow-beige tones, complemented by a striking sawtooth roofline that echoes the movement of dance while maximizing natural light to the building's six dance studios.
The venue houses a flexible 550-seat auditorium with retractable seating, state-of-the-art stage technology, and black timber walls with cork flooring. Beyond the main theatre, it provides six dedicated studios for artist development and new work creation, making it a vital hub for contemporary dance creation and presentation. The building's L-shaped foyer functions as a public living room, with fully glazed windows opening onto Stratford Walk, hosting The Dance Floor—a community performance space featuring free activities, cafés, and bars.
Sadler's Wells East presents a diverse range of dance forms, from hip hop and ballet to flamenco, South Asian dance, and contemporary works by UK and international choreographers. As part of the East Bank cultural precinct alongside the BBC, UAL's London College of Fashion, UCL, and the V&A, the venue represents a new kind of cultural destination with strong local roots, national reach, and global perspectives. The theatre serves as a destination venue for UK dance companies touring to London, with performances developed on the Stratford stage subsequently touring throughout Britain and internationally.
