About This Work
Swan Lake is the most iconic ballet ever created — a work of haunting beauty, romantic tragedy and supreme technical demands. Prince Siegfried falls in love with Odette, a princess under the spell of the sorcerer Von Rothbart, who transforms her and her companions into swans by day. When Rothbart's daughter Odile tricks Siegfried into pledging his love to her instead, the consequences are devastating. Tchaikovsky's score, composed in 1875–76, is one of the most beloved in all of music, and the dual role of Odette/Odile remains the supreme test of a classical dancer. The production most companies perform today is based on the legendary 1895 revival by Petipa and Ivanov.
