Biography
Amber Lewis is an Australian dancer who joined Northern Ballet as a Principal in 2022, bringing with her a career shaped across three continents and a broad repertoire that spans the classical canon, neoclassical Balanchine, and contemporary ballet.
Born and raised in Brisbane, Lewis began dancing at around two and a half years old. She trained at Ecole Studios in Australia before relocating to the United States to study at The Washington School of Ballet, the professional school affiliated with The Washington Ballet. That company became her first professional home, and she subsequently danced with Ballet Arizona and Hong Kong Ballet before making the move to Northern Ballet in Leeds.
Her classical credentials are strong: Lewis has performed lead roles in Don Quixote (Kitri), The Sleeping Beauty (Aurora), Romeo and Juliet (Juliet), La Sylphide (The Sylph), and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Alice). In 2011, she won a bronze medal at the World Ballet Competition, an early marker of her technical and artistic abilities.
Lewis has also built a significant Balanchine profile, dancing principal roles in Rubies, Emeralds, Square Dance, Western Symphony, Serenade, and The Four Temperaments. Her neoclassical work is complemented by experience in choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, Justin Peck, Christopher Bruce, Twyla Tharp, Edwaard Liang, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, and Alejandro Cerrudo — a range that reflects the demands placed on dancers who have worked across different company repertories and styles.
At Northern Ballet, Lewis brings that accumulated depth to a company defined by its commitment to narrative storytelling. The combination of her technical range, classical grounding, and experience across very different companies makes her a distinctive voice within the company.
