Biography

Calvin Richardson is an Australian Principal of The Royal Ballet, promoted in 2024 after a decade with the company. Born in Traralgon, Victoria, he trained at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School before winning a Prix de Lausanne scholarship to The Royal Ballet Upper School in 2012. He joined the company in 2014.

Richardson brings emotional depth and fluidity to a wide range of roles, from the dramatic leads of MacMillan — Des Grieux in Manon and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet — to character-rich roles such as Albert de Belleroche in Strapless and Lensky in Onegin. He created the role of Evans/Septimus Warren Smith in Wayne McGregor's Woolf Works, praised for its queer sensitivity and heartbreaking portrayal. Richardson is also an emerging choreographer, creating works including The Dying Swan and co-creating Bird of Paradise with Joshua Junker.
