Biography

Steven McRae is a Principal of The Royal Ballet, born in Sydney, Australia. He won the Adeline Genée Gold Medal in 2002 and the Prix de Lausanne in 2003, entering The Royal Ballet School on scholarship and graduating into the Company in 2004. His ascent was rapid: First Artist in 2005, Soloist in 2006, First Soloist in 2008, and Principal in 2009.

McRae is renowned for a technical virtuosity — most strikingly in his extraordinary tap work, which has featured in several created roles — combined with a musical intelligence and theatrical range that extends from major classical leads to character and demi-caractère roles. He has created roles in many world premieres, including the Magician/Mad Hatter in Christopher Wheeldon's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (2011), Jack in Frederick Ashton's Sweet Violets (2012), and Florizel in Wheeldon's The Winter's Tale (2014).

His classical repertory includes leading roles in Swan Lake, Giselle, Romeo and Juliet, Manon, Mayerling, La Fille mal gardée, and Coppélia, alongside major works by Ashton, Balanchine, MacMillan, Forsythe, and McGregor.

McRae won the Critics' Circle National Dance Award for Emerging Male Artist (Classical) in 2006 and Best Male Dancer in 2011.
